It's also safe to say If you haven't Heard Of Daddy Long Leggs From 401 ROCKERZ in Providence RI, You're probably alien to the urban dance world or have been hidden underneath a rock for some time. Daddy Long Leggs one of the main members of an elite crew from the inner city Providence RI of the 1990’s known as "THE 401 ROCKERZ". And he has Been doing his thing For More Than 25 Years. D-Leggs (as amongst a few shortened versions) stumbled into the art of “Breaking” or as the media dubbed it“Break dancing” when he was a small child in the mid to late 1980’s. Seeing it like everyone else he took to it instantly. At this time being a child, it wasn’t simple trying to learn on your own and only have seen a few movies like “Breakin” or “Beat Street” to back you up. Besides all of this it was already going out of style so he had just missed the boat of the dance craze where it dissipated around 85 or 86 from the public eye.” You don’t have any kind of higher control, as a small child and doing what you want to do,” he says. Leggs admits that that was his very first time seeing and attempting it. “There was no teacher no others really into it at the time, but it was just enjoyable to see on TV, and thinking your bad because you could do a move or two” he adds.
In the early Nineties Breakin’ was seamlessly off the public radar but existed in a few underground arenas and mostly overseas. NYC Pioneers were credited with revitalizing the dormant dance culture in 1992 or 93. Breakin’ found its way back to Providence RI itself Around 94 and was very underground. The only people doing it were kids who attended rave jams and gritty practice spots. People may of practiced at home or people who re-picked back up on it from What NY was doing and further helped bring it back. Daddy Long Leggs was always partial to wanting to be a dancer even when he wasn't involved. I guess You can say it existed dormant in his blood. circulating around towns in the US were a couple Of NYC Jams & Shows that were filmed live. these events were made into crude home videos that helped expose the reemerging scene in mostly the larger cities of the US.
A few years later it wasn’t until the spring of 1996, when his little brother “Joeskee” who at the time had a back flip crew of neighborhood friends, came to D-Leggs (now 15 about to be 16) raving about a dance school in their area that had B-boy classes available. The Carriage House was an old renovated actual “carriage house” turned dance theater from the earlier part of the century & was a small school that featured this resurging“Breakin” craze among many other ballet, drama & acting classes as one of its free workshops to take. Immediately after learning this Leggs enlisted his brother and a few other child hood friends to start dancing with him but separately of the Carriage House initially. They were more interested in the art forms awesomeness and even more fascinated about its return to the scene of RI. All of the raves and underground parties were springing up around town and so were B-boys/girls. Providence was getting its re-taste of street dance. There were no teachers, very little videos to display its true culture. Mainly Determination & a need to reach for identity was the spark. Daddy Long Leggs had a heart's desire that literally would last his entire life. He was dissed at school in the spring at school for being less than up to par in his skills by other B-boys who were already doing it. The whole summer of 96 he dedicated day after day, hour after hour . A mission to show that he would transform himself to a relevant figure; it was all about breakin, breakin and more breakin. "I was hurt lol I couldn't believe these guys had the nerve to try and crush my dreams early. So I said Ok I'm gonna go home and practice my ass of this whole summer we will see. Sure enough when I came back that fall for 10th Grade Lol everyone was Like YOOO MAN YOU GOT NICE" At this time in the spring may/June of 96 it was only Leggs, Joeskee and Kid flex (all future members of Providence RI “401 Rockerz”) and a few more various friends.
In the latter spring of 96 there was a neighborhood park event, where the acclaimed actual “401 Rockerz” (then comprised of Reckless, Sal, Footluz, Bebe, Russell, krabby, Kato & trainer Jesse “TKO” Moyo) performed and Leggs’s mom filmed it. She knew he would get a kick out of this. Watching this video provided all of the true & tangible inspiration he needed to drive himself to learning even more and eventually becoming a member of this group. “I felt like I had to become good and try to meet these guys to get down with their crew. These dudes were like superstars to me because everyone in the damn neighborhood was talking about them. They weren’t even from the Eastside except Footluz (& Little did I know), so I felt Like I had to represent my neighborhood. I trained hard and I eventually did get down two months later in August just in time for another one of their park shows”. Daddy Long Leggs took the temporary place of member Footluz who went away to the navy but remained with the group during his visits & returns. "I Got down with the group In Like August of 96, It was sort of kinda like a birthday present lol. Everything in my world was moving so rapidly. This is when I really took off. The 401 Rockerz were about to do a second show
at the same park on the Eastside again much like the previous May show, the one I saw on tape. I had My mom call the carriage house ask them If I could audition or join the group. I didn't even know if they were looking for extra members or whatever I just took a shot. They told me to come in, they checked me out and was like OK we like him. They put me on for that August Show. Next came the commercials, shows for major events, small events alike, Movie cameos & whatever. We were starting to battle crews talking Ishh & Just doing our thing. Knocking Kids out the frame. Many People ask me how I got the name "Daddy Long Leggs" Well one day during an early practice at the carriage house for a show, soon after I got down with the crew Probably Like Still within August. I went down & Did backspin & "Reckless" one of the main founding 401 Members Was like "YO DAMN THIS KID GOT THEM DADDY LONG LEGGS" From that phrase It just set an instant fire in me. what he said just echoed to me. I needed a name anyway So I was Like Yo Daddy Long Leggs is going to be my name. All Good dancers have a name that they should live up to. Tell me I am living it & I'd Believe you for sure lol.
After School started in the fall “Kid flex and Joeskee were inducted in the group, this further helped complete the crews strength in numbers and abilities. 401 ROCKERZ was now in full swing battling other would be crews and training with much more fierce determination. This was the fall of 96 into the turn of 97. From then on it was all glory and inspiration from bigger more established Hip Hop phenomena in NYC they paid closer attention to from videos and movies. D-Leggs & The rest always paid respects most notably & especially to the who's, who of breakin & the true aspects. " Many crews or individual dancers in my town were not performing the dance the real way it should. "Myself and the crew were like sponges we were the few people who were doing real footwork, top rock and knew the backgrounds of how things were done". The ROCKERZ soon traveled to the Bronx to perform and take part in legendary “Bronx Bboy jams” where they were able to meet legends of Hip Hop culture. They were invited to par take in dance events, photo shoots, movie and commercial appearances, battles and so much other opportunities. The 401 Rockerz became a household name in RI as the best crew of dancers to be recognized out of the states boundaries. Daddy Long Leggs befriended dozens of new friends From NYC & the his credibility soared.
Leggs & The Crew were also the 1st group from RI to take the art out of the city and slap RI on the map. The crew as of summer of 97 consisted of (minus Krabby, Russell & Kato) all the above mentioned plus now Flex-Roc, Tam-Rock aka "Lady Luv-Bug (The only female and youngest member of 401), As-one (also a DJ) and a few affiliate members from NYC. The Crew Split Up In 1999, due to lack of show activity & creative differences, which split the crew in two, but inadvertently disbanded the whole group. Long Leggs, Joeskee, Kid Flex & Flex-Roc went one way. And Reckless, Bebe, Tam-Rock went the other, leaving Footluz and As-one in the middle. Leggs Continued to dance and started out on new ventures with others, a solo career and embarked on international Appearances. By 2002 He had started His DJ Career and a brief hiatus from The Dance went until 2004. DJing is directly parallel to Dancing so it was an adjacent art form that Leggs took quite well to. In 2004 Daddy Long Leggs had greatly missed Dancing regularly and had decided to start back up again. "I didn't actually ever officially quite, because I would still go down here and there. I took a little break for personal reasons. I love Breakin’ enough that I would of never even pondered that idea. It was just that DJing was giving me a new avenue, I was making some money with that & I could still involve myself in Hip Hop. Every so often I would get a little tug from an angel telling me Get back into this What are you doing!, You love breakin’. So I started fooling Back around again & more regularly". Leggs also needed a new outlet to spread the break culture & his craft to younger generations. He had been exposed & mentored by the best and he wouldn't let that die. His vast knowledge of the dance had to be solidified in a way where he could share it with others in an organized fashion. Daddy Long Leggs had reached out to some old friends from NY he hadn't talk to in a few years. He got himself Engaged In what was currently taking place out there in the B-boy world & got back into the spring of things.
In The Summer of 2007 Daddy Long Leggs Started "Leggwork Productions" an Incarnation on his own name and a dance workshop/performance business that would preserve the dance In RI. He started teaching classes at local schools, community centers and theaters all over the place & offered private classes for whoever expressed an interest in learning how to break. With Leggwork Productions making Noise around the local circuit he gained enough exposure to offer workshops in other states & even a few countries. LWP Teaches the Fundamentals of B-boy Culture to children ages 6 to adult & also fortifies a well rounded journey into what "B-boying" Is really about with the usage of film screenings, pictures, slides and story-telling & Even special guests.
Today Daddy Long Leggs is CEO of his company Leggwork Productions, still occasionally dances & interacts with some of the existing ex alumni of the 401 Rockerz. He also lives to rock on forever! With nearly 30 Years In, tons of shows & appearances later, and more than 30 US+ states & 20 countries visited not to mention Leggwork Productions Dance studio on the verge, he's just getting started. Its instant gratification to say the least and a manifesting dream that is formulating into a projective collage of excellence.
